What is a PTA Committee?

 

A PTA Committee is a group of PTA members who are in charge of planning and organizing a specific program or event.  All responsibilities will be divided up among committee members based on interests and skills. Each committee will be lead by an experienced PTA member. Being a committee member is a great way to take on more responsibility without having to worry that you'll have to plan the entire event alone!

 

What is the time commitment? 

 

There is no set time commitment or schedule required to be a committee member.  There's actually a lot of flexibility that comes with this role!  As long as you are able to help with some aspect of the planning process or take a leadership role during an event, you can be on a committee. Most of the planning and organizing happens prior to the event itself, which means that you can work on the days and times that are convenient for you! This is a great option for parents who would like to help more, but are unable to volunteer during PTA events.

 

What do committee members do?

 

Being a committee member offers more variety than a day of volunteering position. Every event and program has slightly different needs, but there is an event or program for every skillset. There are so many ways to help, and every little bit makes a big difference!

OPPORTUNITIES IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER

  

Back to School Luncheon Chair
Help welcome Laurelwood teachers and staff back for the new school year! Responsibilities include selecting, ordering, picking up, and delivering lunch for staff before school begins. A simple but meaningful way to support our educators.
Estimated commitment: a few hours before the school year begins.

 

Book Fair Chair and Co-chair
Help bring the Scholastic Book Fair to Laurelwood! Volunteers help with setup, shopping days, cashiering, teardown, and event organization for one of the school’s favorite traditions.
Estimated commitment: approximately 10–20 hours per fair.

 

Community Coffee Chair and Co-chair
Help create a welcoming atmosphere for families during monthly assemblies by organizing coffee and light refreshments. This role mostly involves shopping, simple setup, and cleanup once a month.
Estimated commitment: approximately 1–2 hours per month.

 

Family Reading Night Chair and Co-chair
Support literacy and family engagement by helping organize this fun evening event celebrating reading and learning together.
Estimated commitment: moderate around event planning period.

 

Family Snowball Dance Chair and Committee
Help organize one of Laurelwood’s favorite family events with music, decorations, activities, and fun memories for students and families.
Estimated commitment: moderate seasonal commitment.

 

Financial Reviewer
Help support transparency and accountability within the PTA by reviewing monthly Treasurer reports and participating in semi-annual financial reviews. This role includes reviewing financial documents, sharing findings at PTA meetings, and helping ensure PTA funds are handled responsibly. Great for detail-oriented volunteers who enjoy organization and spreadsheets.
Estimated commitment: approximately 1–2 hours per month plus semi-annual reviews.

Green Team Liaison

Serve as a bridge between the school and PTA on sustainability and environmental initiatives. Great for volunteers passionate about environmental education and student enrichment.
Estimated commitment: light ongoing communication throughout the year.

 

Honorary Service Awards Chair

Help recognize outstanding volunteers, staff, and community members who make Laurelwood special. Responsibilities include organizing nominations and coordinating award recognition.
Estimated commitment: light seasonal commitment.

 

Hospitality Committee
Support PTA and school events throughout the year by helping coordinate refreshments, snacks, and welcoming touches for staff and families. Great for volunteers who enjoy helping behind the scenes.
Estimated commitment: flexible throughout the year.

 

Ice Cream Social Chair and Committee

Help welcome families back to Laurelwood by planning activity stations and supporting this fun community-building event.
Estimated commitment: light to moderate before the school year begins.

 

5th Grade Pool Party Committee

Help coordinate the beloved end-of-year pool party for graduating students including food, decorations, volunteers, and event logistics. This role works especially well with a small committee.
Estimated commitment: just a few planning hours spread across spring.

 

Art to Remember Chair
Help organize student artwork submissions and keepsake ordering through the Art to Remember fundraiser program. A great role for volunteers who enjoy art, organization, and supporting student creativity.

Estimated commitment: seasonal commitment around fundraiser timeline.

 

Morning Greeter Chair and Committee

Help organize volunteers who welcome students during morning drop-off and support safe, positive starts to the school day. Great for parents who enjoy community-building and helping students feel welcomed. Committee members volunteer during the morning drop-off ensuring children get to school safely and traffic is controlled.
Estimated commitment: a few setup hours in August plus light coordination during the year.

 

Movie Night Chair and Committee

Help organize movie nights for students and families including setup, concessions, equipment coordination, and event logistics.
Estimated commitment: event-based throughout the year.

 

Multicultural Events Committee

Help celebrate the diversity of the Laurelwood community through cultural events, activities, and family engagement opportunities. Great for volunteers who enjoy community-building and inclusion efforts.
Estimated commitment: varies by event schedule.

 

Project Cornerstone Chair and Committee

Support student social-emotional learning and classroom community through reading, discussions, and classroom engagement opportunities. Great for parents who enjoy working directly with students. The chair organizing the in-class volunteers.
Estimated commitment: varies based on classroom schedule.

 

Pumpkin Festival Chair and Committee

Help support Laurelwood’s largest and most exciting community event! Volunteers can help with games, decorations, concessions, setup, cleanup, ticketing, and more. There are opportunities for every level of involvement.
Estimated commitment: heavier involvement August–October.

 

Reflections Chair

Coordinate Laurelwood’s participation in the National PTA Reflections Arts Program and help celebrate student creativity through visual arts, music, writing, dance, and photography.
Estimated commitment: seasonal commitment during Reflections program timeline.

 

STEAM Night Chair and Committee

Help support an exciting evening focused on science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities for students and families. Volunteers help coordinate activities, communication, and event logistics.
Estimated commitment: moderate around event planning season.

 

Tiger Shop Chair and Co-chair

Help run the student store and support fun incentive and school spirit opportunities for students throughout the school year.
Estimated commitment: light ongoing support.

 

Teacher Appreciation Week Chair and Committee
Help celebrate Laurelwood teachers and staff through special appreciation activities, lunches, treats, flowers, and classroom coordination. This is a rewarding role for volunteers who enjoy organizing simple projects and spreading kindness.
Estimated commitment: approximately 10–20 hours throughout the spring.

 

Tiger Picnic Chair and Committee

Help organize this fun community-building event! Responsibilities include creating flyers and posters, coordinating volunteers, setting up the PTA table, organizing snacks, and helping families connect with the PTA.
Estimated commitment: moderate around event preparation and day-of support.

 

Walk-a-thon Chair and Committee
Help support one of Laurelwood’s biggest fundraising and community events! Volunteers may assist with event planning, sponsorships, logistics, student engagement, and school spirit activities.
Estimated commitment: varies based on involvement level.

 

WatchDOGS Chair
Help organize father/father-figure volunteer participation on campus and encourage positive school involvement and mentorship opportunities.
Estimated commitment: light ongoing coordination.

 

Yearbook Committee
Help capture Laurelwood memories that families will treasure forever! The Yearbook team coordinates photos, page layouts, editing, and yearbook production throughout the school year.

This role is creative, collaborative, and especially great for parents who enjoy design, organization, or storytelling. This is a flexible, mostly work-from-home role and would make a HUGE difference by helping share the workload during the spring production season.

Estimated commitment: ongoing throughout the year with heavier work in spring.

 

Project Cornerstone

This program is a community initiative led by the YMCA Its mission is to create an environment where adults support and value all youth so that they grow up feeling values, respected, and known. This program asks volunteers to come into the classroom once a month to read a book, lead a discussion, and do an activity with the students. All of the books and activities center around important themes in our students' lives and facilitate conversations about topics like self-confidence and healthy ways to express feelings. Room Parent

While responsibilities may vary based on your teacher, you can count on being the point person for your class during Teacher Appreciation Week. Some teachers may ask for help organizing class parties. Some may request in class help. Some may prefer a more hands off approach. Each class has its own Room Parent (or Room Parent Team), so reach out to your student's teacher if you're interested.
